Mercruiser Alpha One, R and MR Serial Numbers 6225577 THRU 0D469858

    Insist on ONLY Original Factory Parts

The Bell Housing is the "helmet" shaped housing to which the drive bolts to.
It swivels up and down with the drive.

The Bell Housing is held in place by two Hinge Pins on either side which pass through the Gimbal Ring.
It can be removed from the Gimbal Ring by removing the two Hinge Pins and unclamping or
removing the Ujoint Bellows, Exhaust Bellow, Shift Cable Assembly and Water Hose.
You use a special Hinge Pin Tool to remove the Hinge Pins.
You also need a special Shift Cable Socket Tool to remove the Shift Cable Assembly.
The Hinge Pins are hidden behind the black plastic Trim Sender Switches which you can remove with a phillips head screw driver.
We strongly suggest that you get Manual #6 Sterndrives (Alpha One, R and MR).

The Bell Housing must be removed to:
1. Replace the Ujoint Bellows or Water Hose.
2. Replace the Trim Sender Switches.
3. Remove the Gimbal Ring and/or Upper Steering Shaft or the Upper Steering Shaft Seal.

You do NOT have to remove the Bell Housing to replace the Gimbal Bearing.
The Gimbal Bearing can be replaced by reaching in through the Bell Housing with the correct tools.
You do NOT have to remove the Bell Housing to replace the Shift Cable Assembly.

It is rare that you would actually have to replace your Bell Housing unless it has corroded through or been damaged by impact.
Make sure you have properly identified which drive system you have before order parts for your Gimbal Housing Assembly.
Alpha One and Alpha One Gen II parts are NOT interchangeable.
Below is a newer style Alpha Gen II Gimbal Housing Assembly
Notice the orange piece. This is a special tool which holds the shift slide in place during installation of the drive.
